Day 71: Fruit by Em

I've been scarce. I'm sorry. I've got a lot going on. My hubby is currently off in the woods of North Carolina with a bunch of high schoolers and my mom is visiting. Today, we took Sierra to the Graves Mountain Apple Harvest Festival. It was awesome! I had funnel cake! And there were lots of fruits there: pumpkins and apples and corn and whatnot, but I'm going to be the second person today to post a picture of a gourd because they are so funky looking and I love all the colors.
Did you know that a fruit with a hard shell like these (and cucumber, pumpkin, squash, and melons) is called a pepo? Such a fun little word. And they are all part of the same plant family, the Cucurbitaceae? Well, now ya know!

Everything in the area is so new and commercial looking and then there's this odd Auto Repair place named Apple, with an awesome font and an old gas tank. For a while I would drive right by and have no clue what they did there. I thought they worked on Apple computers, but only the really old ones with green text displays. It would at least match their fancy green lettering.

We headed out to the farms today to pumpkin pick. We did not pick. It was awful there. But I loved looking at the gourds.

this is a 'datura', commonly called 'angel's trumpet' for its super fragrant white flower, or 'thorn apple' because of it's fruit... this 'thorn apple' is FILLED with seeds and year after year this plant reseeds itself in my garden.
datura's have an interesting and sinister history... back in the day it was given to those whose sexual powers were weakened... the leaves were used as an important ingredient in witches' ointment that induced trances... slaves were given it before being buried alive in south america... and john parkinson, an herbalist, warned of the east indian women who performed 'strange acts' with the seeds, giving it to their husbands in their drinks, slowly poisoning them................
