Day 60: Retro by H

I crush hard on old camera equipment. I mean, like really, really hard. If I had the means I would by every single body and lens and attachment and flash unit I could get my hands on until there was no room to move in my apartment and people started refereing to me as the 'crazy camera guy'.

Day 59: Palm by H

One of my hands is holding a deck of cards in this picture, while the other is holding a shiny twenty-cent piece. Illustrious illusionists such as myself call this 'palming'. (actually I am pretty crap at palming coins...)

Day 57: Batman by H

I often look up at the tops of buildings. When I walk past this particular building and scan the crumbling gothic parapets I always expect to see the Caped Crusader grimly observing the city he protects.

Day 56: Sacred by H

This is the Bear Spirit. I painted him (my first ever painting) to honour the visit of my friend Erin.

Day 51: Underneath by H

You know when you go for a walk at night and some guy with a crazy-determined look on his sweat-shined face and earphones pumping motivational rock runs past you at speed? Well underneath that guy's shirt he might have The Simpsons brand band-aids on his nipples to prevent chafing. Just saying.

Day 50: Odd by H

This is my brother. Second time he has featured here. How odd.

Day 49: Hair by H

I shot a video homage for Plants vs Zombies today. This is Lizbt playing the sunflower. I think we'll all be seeing this kind of look soon on the runways of Milan, Tokyo, Paris etc. The yellow goes nice with the blue hair.

Day 49: Dark by H

I play Ned Kelly sometimes at the Old Melbourne Gaol. As part of a show they put on for the tourists on Saturdays. Much of it is played for laughs, despite his story being a pretty dark one.
Unlikely as it seems this is not my first job in a gaol. I used to work at Fremantle Prison as a "screamer". This job consisted of throwing a life-sized dummy over the 3rd floor railing and down on to the suicide-netting over the heads of the tour group, while letting out your best blood-curdling scream. The punters would scream, and then laugh at themselves. There were marks drawn on the walls of the cell I waited in, some of them left by prisoners counting out the days (the prison didn't close until 1991), others made by 'screamers' counting off to tours. (We got paid per tour). Amazing how a place of so much misery, violence, and despair can be re-invented as a place to bring the kids for a few laughs. It always makes me think of the quote, "Comedy is tragedy plus time." There were no working lights in the cells either, so it was pretty dark in that sense too.

Day 47: Punch by H

This is my friend Warren. I invited him to come over to my place on Sunday to participate in the filming a tribute video for Plants vs Zombies. He declined, without giving an actual reason or invoking any prior commitment. That deserves a mild punching right? A therapeutic pummeling at least...

Day 46: Circus by H

I dabble in circus. This is my Circus bag, I break it out for dabbling reasons on a semi-regular basis.
I wrote a fantasy novel last year, it was called "The Gaff" and was set principally among a circus troupe.
Did you know that know 'circus' meant circle until the late eighteen century? Well, you do now.

Day 44: Sleep by H

I was 14 when I first discovered "Macbeth". I had already fallen in love the year before, thanks to "Romeo and Juliet" but I think it was "Macbeth" that sealed the deal. (Followed by Hamlet the year after - I should say here that I had a wonderful English teacher, thanks Mrs Gaby...)

Anyway this page is from the scene after Macbeth has murdered King Duncan and is discussing it with Lady M. I got to play Macbeth in this scene, and did it in full costume, hands dripping blood, in front of the class. It was great. Even then the lines about sleep from this scene rang in my head. Like the ones I tried to get in focus for the shot-

"The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath
Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast -"

At the time I understood them on an intellectual level, but as the years rolled on their meaning really hit home. I'll say this about sleep - you don't really appreciate it until you have a falling out. And then you realise, like Mr Mac did, that your life isn't much of anything without it.

Day 43: Square by H

This is not so much a square as a cube. A Companion Cube. MY companion cube to be exact. I love him and I will never put him in the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator, never, ever, ever. Lizbt made him for me for my birthday. (I'd say 'BEST PRESENT EVER' but she outdoes herself on an annual basis.)

Day 40: Dissapointment by H

A woman in front of me walking along the street tonight said, "I am just going to duck in here and buy a Monkey's Face." Needless to say I followed her into the store she went into to observe the transaction.

It turned out to be a type of biscuit.

I was disappointed. But I bought one anyway, photographed it creepy-style with the help of my live-in Monkey, then devoured it along with a nice glass of milk.

Disappointment Alleviated. (H=1, Cookie = 0)

Day 37: Phone by H

This is my phone. He is Hrothgar, son of Havelock and twin brother of Malach. As modelled by the Goblin King. "Nothing? Nothing? tra, la, la!"

Day 36: Leaf by H

What you see is what you get.

Day 35: Secret by H

This remote controlled R2-D2 is from 1978. By the tame he came into my service (circa 1987) his wheels no longer turned, so the was no point in putting batteries inside him. Flash forward a few years (not as many as you might think) and I needed some secret place to stash several varieties of contraband. R2 came in very handy. Our secret okay? (Mum you don't read this blog do you?)
