Day 71: Fruit by Missy

fruit

this is a 'datura', commonly called 'angel's trumpet' for its super fragrant white flower, or 'thorn apple' because of it's fruit... this 'thorn apple' is FILLED with seeds and year after year this plant reseeds itself in my garden.
datura's have an interesting and sinister history... back in the day it was given to those whose sexual powers were weakened... the leaves were used as an important ingredient in witches' ointment that induced trances... slaves were given it before being buried alive in south america... and john parkinson, an herbalist, warned of the east indian women who performed 'strange acts' with the seeds, giving it to their husbands in their drinks, slowly poisoning them................
